Jan SPÁLENÝ
Music director, dramaturge, nighttime narrator of radio fairy tales – the father of Czech blues was born on December 4, 1942, in Královské Vinohrady to very young, musically inclined parents as their firstborn. As a child, he played the violin poorly and without motivation. After struggling through puberty, he discovered Dixieland, his first gateway to the world of jazz and improvisation. Most importantly, however, he encountered wind instruments, which he would love for the rest of his life.
After graduating from high school, he worked as a digger for a courtyard crew at the Rudý Letov factory. He studied at the Prague Conservatory from 1964 to 1968. He played trombone, tuba, and baritone saxophone alternately, and in 1956, at the age of 56, he began learning to play the cornet. Over the years, he played Dixieland, rock 'n' roll, and rhythm & blues. With his brother Petr, he had bands called Hipp's and Apollobeat, and he guest starred in pop bands and music that is mostly referred to as classical. Since 1984, he has lived for ASPM and with ASPM.
He has been composing, writing lyrics, arranging, and provoking his entire life...
