In relation to dance music, Martyn has always stood in a scene of his own. His aesthetic traces back to his roots in UK-originated hybrids of bass music with an added flavour of Detroit-influenced jazz. Seven years after the haunting resonance of Voids, he has returned to the album format with Music For Existing.
Dutch-born Martijn Deijkers, aka Martyn, has been living in Washington, D.C. now for many years. Following the international success of his releases on op Hyperdub, Ostgut Ton and Brainfeeder, he co-founded the label 3024 alongside visual artist Jeroen Erosie. Most 3024 signees nowadays stem from Martyn’s Artist Mentoring Program. Launched in 2020, he uses the program to teach and mentor producers. On Music for Existing he collaborates with musicians that cannot be pinned down to a genre, such as cellist Lucinda Chua, pianist Duval Timothy and drummer Mark Cisneros.
‘A dynamic fusion of jazz and bass music… Music for Existing presents its own three-dimensional world, self-contained and self-sufficient’ (Pitchfork).
