A three-year relationship came to an end and Sophia Stel picked up her electric guitar once again. The result is the EP ‘How to Win At Solitaire’, on which her heartbreak is set to a danceable beat. Her low, rich voice lends the electronic pop a sense of lived experience. The Canadian artist and producer learnt the ropes in the basement of the DIY club Paradise in Vancouver. After every club weekend, she would set up her studio again. You can hear that background in her beats, whilst her lyrics have the directness of indie rock. She also keeps control of the music videos herself. Using an old digital camera, she films the grainy footage for tracks such as ‘I’ll Take It’ and ‘You Could Hate Me’.
